Turnovers hamper ACCC men’s upset bid

COFFEYVILLE — Allen County Community College’s Red Devils came up short in pulling off an upset of NJCAA, Division I fifth-ranked Coffeyville Community College’s Red Ravens Wednesday.

The Red Devils went after their fourth straight victory in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. But on the road on the Red Raven’s court, Allen County trailed by nine at halftime and lost 86-74.

Allen County shot 50 percent, 28 of 56, from the field but Coffeyville hit on 52 percent (33 of 64) of its field goal attempts. Each team hit seven three-point field goals.

Coffeyville downed 13 of 24 free throw tosses while Allen County was 11 of 15 from the free-throw line. The Red Devils had a 35 to 32 rebounding edge on the Ravens. Unfortunately, Allen County turned the ball over 23 times in the contest.

The loss dropped the Red Devils to 5-8 in Jayhawk East and 11-14 overall. They’re 4-7 in Region VI, Division I action. Coffeyville improved to 12-1 in conference play and 23-2 overall.

Terrence Williams paced the Red Devils with 19 points. Canon Fields and Drelan Tripplett each tossed in 12 points. Terrell Shears had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as he went 6 of 7 from the line.

Fields dished out nine of ACCC’s 19 assists and made four of the team’s nine steals.

Coffeyville was led by Dawon Cummings, who hit four treys, with 19 points. Colby Carr chipped in 15 points and Chadrack Lufile scored 14.

Allen County hosts Independence (9-4, 14-11) Saturday. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. in the ACCC gym.
